Invitation Letter to Canada — Notarized in Scarborough

Inviting parents, family or friends to visit Canada? Sign your letter of invitation in front of a licensed notary in about 10 minutes. From $20, same-day.

Quick answer

A letter of invitation supports a visitor visa or super visa application by explaining who is visiting, why, and who you are. IRCC doesn’t generally require it to be notarized, but notarizing it confirms the host signed it in front of a notary. Bring the unsigned letter and your photo ID; it costs $20.

Frequently asked questions

Does an invitation letter to Canada need to be notarized?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not generally require a letter of invitation to be notarized. Many hosts still choose to notarize it because it confirms the letter was signed by the host in front of a notary. Always follow the instructions for your specific application or visa office.

Who signs the invitation letter?

The person in Canada who is inviting the visitor, usually a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, signs it in front of the notary with valid photo ID.

What should an invitation letter include?

Information about the visitor (name, date of birth, address, relationship to you, purpose and length of the visit, where they will stay and who will pay) and about you (name, date of birth, address, phone, job, status in Canada, and the number of people in your household).

Is it different for a super visa?

Yes. For a parent or grandparent super visa, IRCC asks for a signed letter of invitation from the child or grandchild in Canada that includes a promise of financial support and details of the household, along with other documents. Check IRCC’s current super visa checklist.

How much does it cost to notarize an invitation letter?

$20 for the notarized letter. Attached supporting documents can also be certified as true copies at $10 each in the same appointment.
