Affidavits & Statutory Declarations in Scarborough

Swear or affirm your affidavit, statutory declaration or sworn statement in front of a licensed notary and commissioner of oaths. From $20, often the same day.

Quick answer

To commission an affidavit or statutory declaration, bring the unsigned document and one government-issued photo ID to our Scarborough office. You take an oath or affirmation, sign in front of the notary, and we sign and seal it. The fee is $20 for the first signature and seal and $10 for each additional.

Documents we commission

  • Affidavits for family court, small claims, civil matters and tribunals
  • Statutory declarations for IRCC, Service Canada, Service Ontario, insurers and banks
  • Sworn statements such as common-law union, single status, lost document and name declarations
  • Affidavits of identity, residency and support
  • Exhibits attached to affidavits, each stamped and signed

How it works

  1. Book a time by phone, text or our booking form.
  2. Bring the complete, unsigned document, any exhibits, and one valid government-issued photo ID.
  3. The notary confirms your identity and asks you to swear an oath or make a solemn affirmation that the contents are true.
  4. You sign in front of the notary, who then signs, dates and applies the seal.

Affidavits and declarations are made under oath. Making a false statement is a serious offence, so please read your document carefully before your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Not sure which one you need? See affidavit vs statutory declaration and notary vs commissioner of oaths.

What is the difference between an affidavit and a statutory declaration?

An affidavit is a sworn or affirmed statement of facts, usually used in court proceedings. A statutory declaration is a solemn declaration made under the Canada Evidence Act or Ontario’s Evidence Act, usually used outside court, for example by government agencies, insurers and banks. Both must be signed in front of a commissioner of oaths or notary.

Can you write my affidavit for me?

We can print the document you bring, but we cannot give legal advice or decide what your affidavit should say. If you need help with wording, many agencies provide their own forms, or you can consult a lawyer or paralegal.

Can I sign the affidavit before my appointment?

No. You must sign in front of the notary after taking an oath or making an affirmation. If the document is already signed, you will need a fresh, unsigned copy.

Do I swear on a religious book?

You can choose to swear an oath or make a solemn affirmation. Both have the same legal effect.

How much does it cost to commission an affidavit?

$20 for the first signature and seal and $10 for each additional signature or seal in the same appointment, including exhibit stamps.
