How Much Does a Notary Cost in Ontario?
What you will actually pay to get a document notarized or commissioned, what changes the price, and worked examples.
Ontario has no fixed government price for notary services; each notary sets their own fees, usually per signature and seal. At Notary Public in Scarborough, the first notary signature and seal costs $20 and each additional one in the same appointment costs $10. Mobile visits and government apostille fees are extra.
How notary fees are usually charged
Most notaries in Ontario price their work in one of three ways: per signature and seal, per document, or a flat appointment fee. Per-seal pricing is the most transparent, because you only pay for what is actually stamped and signed.
What changes the price
- Number of seals. Each signer, exhibit or certified copy is usually a separate seal.
- Mobile service. A notary travelling to your home, office or hospital adds a travel fee.
- Drafting. Preparing a document for you costs more than witnessing one you bring.
- Government fees. Apostilles and authentications are charged separately by the province.
- Timing. Some offices add evening, weekend or rush charges. We don’t, during our posted hours.

Getting a document ready for use abroad? Notarization is only the first step. Ontario’s Official Documents Services charges its own fee for an apostille or certificate of authentication. See our apostille guide.
How to keep the cost down
- Bring everything that needs signing in one appointment.
- Arrive with the document complete but unsigned, so it doesn’t need to be redone.
- Have every signer bring valid photo ID so no one needs a second visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a set price for notary services in Ontario?
No. Ontario doesn’t publish a fee schedule for private notaries, so each notary sets their own prices. Most charge per signature and seal or per document, with extra charges for mobile visits, drafting or after-hours service.
How much does it cost to notarize one document in Scarborough?
At Notary Public in Scarborough it’s $20 for the first notary signature and seal. If that one document needs more seals (for example, exhibits or several signers), each additional seal is $10.
Does it cost more to get a document apostilled?
Yes. Notarization is one fee; the apostille or authentication from Ontario’s Official Documents Services is a separate government fee paid to the province. Check ontario.ca for the current amount.
Is a mobile notary more expensive?
Usually. A mobile visit adds a travel fee on top of the standard notary fees. We quote mobile visits based on your address.
Are there hidden fees?
Not with us. We charge $20 for the first signature and seal and $10 for each additional, with no same-day or evening surcharge in the office.
